Chapter 10: Scott

Morning came with an eerie stillness. The storm had raged all night outside the cave, blocking in the whole mountain with heavy clouds and relentless snow. Scott knew that it had gone on for hours, because he had refrained from sleeping until the wind died down. He knew his duty as the guide in charge out here. It was to protect those in his care, and that meant giving up his sleep. No problem.

He wasn’t sure if he could have found rest, anyway, with his keen awareness of Coral’s closeness. They were all dressed in multiple layers, as well as being wrapped in their sleeping bags, but he could scent everything about her, and it was making him crazy.

Instead of sleeping, he thought about the soft sheen of her blonde hair, the way it flipped out at her chin as if it were as full of energy as she always was. The way it smelled like apple blossoms. He thought about the warm scent of the sweater she’d been wearing all day. It was as bright as her sense of humor, but it smelled like the spicy sensuousness of her skin.

He knew that his body was hard with wanting her. That was one thing these sleeping bags were good for. There was so much bulk all around him that nobody would remark on the way his cock was straining against the fabric of his clothes.

Well, no shifter would ever invade the privacy of another by commenting on such a thing. And Coral didn’t know about it, so that was all fine.

Was that what he wanted though? For her not to know how much he wanted her? He’d tried everything already, it seemed. They’d hit it off as friends, then they had tried to date in a conventional way. Some of that had been long-distance, sure, but lots of people did that.

Then they’d tried just going for it and making love.

“God, that was great,” Coral moaned in her sleep.

Scott turned his head toward her. Was she thinking the same thing he was?

“Oh, more…” Coral’s voice was so soft he knew he’d heard it only because he was already awake. If Nathan was still asleep, this wasn’t going to wake him up. Good, because it was probably not fit for his ears.

Was she thinking about their night together? Was he about to hear his own name?

Scott leaned forward, wanting more than anything to take Coral in his arms and kiss her all over.

“More, please.” Coral’s moan was plaintive. “That’s my favorite. Chocolate…”

Scott barked a genuine laugh. Here he was, thinking about how much he wanted to get into her sleeping bag right now and ravish her naked body.

And she was dreaming about food.

His shoulders shook with amusement. How long had it been since somebody made him laugh, really laugh like that? There was something about this woman that made her like nobody he’d ever met before.

She’s your mate.

That was all his bear needed to say. Scott knew it was true.

But what was he going to do about it?

His laughter had woken Coral.
